TYPO3 Translation System Analysis and Modernization Assessment

This project aims to comprehensively assess TYPO3’s current translation handling system, comparing it with modern industry standards and best practices. We’re addressing the lack of a clear understanding of where TYPO3’s translation capabilities stand in relation to current market demands and technological possibilities.

What do you want to achieve by the end of Q2 2025?

  3. Identify gaps between current implementation and industry best practices

This assessment will provide the TYPO3 community with valuable insights into the current state of translation handling and clear directions for improvement. It will benefit the TYPO3 community by:

  • Identifying potential areas for modernization
  • Improving multilingual content management capabilities
  • Strengthening TYPO3’s position in the international market
  • Providing a foundation for future development decisions.

Budget and expected Outcomes

A budget of 10,000 EUR seems appropriate for this scope of work, as it would cover:

  • Research time
  • Analysis of competing systems
  • Documentation
  • Creation of recommendations and roadmap
  • Community consultation
  • POC Extension

Dear Olivier,

Thank you for your budget idea. We at the Translation Handling Initiative have been working regularly for over a year on a voluntary basis on the points you mentioned (and more) and now have an increasingly clear idea of the direction the system should take.

Involving the community was just as much a part of the process as examining the current state of the system. We are in regular contact with the core development team and coordinate our goals accordingly.

We are also currently planning to summarize all our findings in a formal concept. A budget application has already been submitted to the TYPO3 Association.

In view of your community budget request, it seems sensible to join forces. If you are interested, let’s discuss this at one of our next weekly meetings. We meet every Friday from 12 to 1 pm in our slack channel.

Do I understand correctly that the work and findings of the Translation Handling Initiative will be used in this budget request and the work will be carried out together with the Initiative team?

Yes, we will compile the initiative’s latest findings and compare them with a set of other CMS (open-source and vendor-oriented). We will describe current industry standards and how the use cases relate to typical client setups. Additionally, we hope to propose possible steps for the upcoming releases to the related teams. As the scope has been reduced, we might not need the requested budget in full.
